Beauty for Ashes | Sara V

Most of my career is about love. It's about documenting the new love and the happily ever after. As Sara quoted, "you never know when that happily ever after will end."

Sara and I briefly talked in the past about collaborating and doing some trades. She is a hair and makeup artist and I really wanted to get some "styled" clients for my portfolio. 3 or 4 years later she messaged me wanting a session for herself. This was no ordinary shoot.

You would never know it by meeting her, but she recently lost her soul mate. Her husband passed away 5 short months ago in a fight against cancer. This was the love of her life. You can read more about it on her blog. Once she messaged me about doing it, I immediately remembered when she was so willing to help me out in my beginning career that I was eager to capture this time in her life. It was the least I could do. I went to her facebook page and found her blog, and as I read tears streamed down my face  I bawled like a baby.

As it grew closer to her session I began to pray for her and for words of comfort. I haven't lost someone that close to me so I struggled with what to say. Then the Lord spoke. He said that even though I didn't know death in THAT way, He did. His son went to the cross for us. A DEATH that brought LIFE.

He also laid one of my favorite verses on my heart for this shoot. Isaiah 61:1-5. We find ourselves broken, prisoners, in bondage, mourning and in dirty filthy ashes but when we let Jesus in, he exchanges those hard times, that pain, that captivity, that moment of not knowing if we can go another day for FREEDOM, JOY,  HEALING and BEAUTY.

Sara, you are beautiful, strong, and amazing! You said that you couldn't be getting through this without God and that is SO true. Thank you for letting me share your story and for being a pillar of support to others who have lost a dear one.

  3. I love this session in it's entirety. She is beautiful and so are these photos. It's as if you can literally see her soul through your lens. I just married my soul mate, therefore my heart aches for her. Brittany, you did a fantastic job and I'm sure that God gave you the exact words she needed to hear. Lovely, just lovely.

  5. I know what it's like. My first husband died at 24. I was a single mom for 7 years until I met my new best friend and married him. But in the single season, those were some of the best times of my life; I'd never want to lose them. You can either wallow in tragedy or look up and say, "Now what, God?" and He's pretty awesome at making all thing new and beautiful.
